Delivering an SoC is no longer just about the silicon. It includes drivers, boot code, HAL, protocol stacks, middleware, and SDKs. Since software is the last part of the system to be completed, development teams are looking for ways to start software development earlier. The most common method for starting software development before silicon availability is FPGA prototyping. New approaches in emulation and virtual prototyping are opening up opportunities for starting earlier and doing more development.

FPGAs continue to gain capacity and performance as FPGA producers aggressively move to smaller geometries allowing faster execution of larger designs and enabling better prototyping for more systems. Emulation vendors recognize that software development is a critical capability, and are addressing the needs of the pre-silicon software development community. Virtual prototyping tools have made advances pushing boundaries of how early in the design cycle software development can practically begin. Verification vendors are bringing these technologies, and more, together in new and innovative ways.
