A strong foundation of hardware assisted security can be found below the OS in firmware instruction set APIs and security engines that are shipped with each device processor. Historically, only specialized developers or device OEMs have utilized the trusted execution environments available in silicon to strengthen their application security. IoT presents a a new set of demands where M2M or remote IoT platforms need to attest software and device identity, ensure protected boot and storage, and create trusted execution environments secured by the platform. Moreover, IoT standards like OpenFog will require a consistent platform security development experience as they write applications that may run at the edge, in the cloud, or span different processor types. In this presentation, Intel presents an overview of the core platform security capabilities and suggests a unifying pattern for IoT.
